Djibouti hands 267 Eritreans over to UNHCR
Eritrean News: The Djiboutian government has handed 267 Eritreans, seized during a three-day border conflict in 2008, over to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), presidential adviser Najib Ali Tahir said on Monday, according to Anadolu Agency.
“Some of them are military deserters and prisoners of the Djibouti-Eritrea war, which broke out on June 10, 2008,” Tahir told Anadolu Agency.
Tahir said the Eritreans were technically under Djibouti’s protection, going on to note that “there are [another] 19 prisoners of war (POWs) temporarily under our protection.”
“We have made them talk to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to facilitate their return to their country, and we’re doing this despite the fact that we never heard of Djibouti’s POWs,” Tahir said.
Djibouti and neighboring Eritrea have twice engaged in border conflicts.
As a result, Djibouti recalled its ambassador and broke off relations with Eritrea, which weren’t fully restored until 2001.
The two countries clashed again for three days in June of 2008, leading to another deterioration of ties.

The Young People’s Front for Democracy & Justice (YPFDJ) - an Eritrean youth organisation in the diaspora – will be holding its annual conference between 17th – 21st of April 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland. This conference which is going to be the 10th consecutive Annual Conference will be attended by 650 participants from YPFDJ chapters around the world.
The conference aims to involve Eritrean youth activists who are serving their communities and nation in different capacities. Also, several community leaders and organisation representatives will be participating in the conference which will be addressing pertinent topics that affects the Eritrean youth inside and outside the country.
The youth conference which is unique of its kind and nature has attracted thousands of active youth members over the years and created a vibrant youth forum which critically analyse the myriad issues facing in the daily lives of Eritrean youth in the diaspora and the homeland; and organise themselves to change their environment for a better future.

Eri-TV – Extending of Electrification Process in Agordat Sub Zone
Eritrean News: They further indicated that the communal venture is witnessing active participation of the members of the People’s Army.
Among the inhabitants, Mr. Idris Osman and Ms. Halima Ibrahim said that the popular awareness as regards government endeavors seeking sustainable community development is on the rise, and asserted that they would enhance efforts so as to realize the cherished goals.
Mr. Musa Haj, Administrator of Engene area, explained that the inhabitants of the area previously erected poles for installation of electricity wires through higher enthusiasm, while the current task pertains to cabling.
Mr. Girmai Teklehaimanot, in charge of the task’s follow-up, disclosed that the villages of Adi-Quslay, Atobirhan, Adi-kukey, Adi-Shibot and others in the Administrative area of Tekreret as well as Dige sub-zone would be beneficiaries of the project. He also lauded the active participation of the inhabitants.

Eri-TV – 40th year anniversary of Bologna Festival – Italy
Eritrean News – Tigrinya: Reports indicated that extensive preparations are being made to mark 40th anniversary of Bologna Festival which is due to be conducted from 4 to 6 June in Bologna, Italy.
The coordinating committee of the 3-day event stated that it would witness the staging of cultural shows, seminars and other activities.
It is to be recalled that the Festival was organized by nationals residing abroad during the Eritrean armed struggle for independence with a view to providing groundwork for discussion and thereby inspiring the Eritrean people’s relations and collaboration with the EPLF.
Moreover, the historical event provided a forum for all citizen artists and added to cultural renaissance, besides portraying the Eritrean people’s ever-prevailing spirit of steadfastness.
Bologna Festival was unveiled for the first time in 1974 and continued as the annual National Festival in Asmara after national independence.

Eritrea – Heavy rain fall causes property loss in Areza sub-zone
Eritrean News – Tigrinya: Reports indicated that a heavy rain fall accompanied by storm and ice caused property loss in Areza sub-zone.
Accordingly, various households and social service facilities have been damaged, while more than 80 livestock died.On the other hand, a total of 15 micro-dams and 51 ponds have impounded water to full capacity as a result of the rain falls the sub-zone has been witnessing since last month.

Eritrea As Always In Favor Of Healthy Partnership And Cooperation

What has to date been achieved in Eritrea is, of course, not the end but a start of sustainable success stories. “Seeing is believing” and making participatory observation makes one have a clear and an undistorted, an unembellished but rather exact picture of the subject matter. A second or third hand information on the contrary could only give a mixture of real and distorted image the ultimate result of which is only a shabby one.
Eritrea As Always In Favor Of Healthy Partnership And Cooperation
A United Nations high-level development delegation had a chance to visit Eritrea and also to hold discussions with Government officials as regards reinforcing their cooperation in the upcoming development programs of the country. This team has then made a participatory observation of the development programs that has been put in place in the Southern and Central regions of the country.
During its stay in Eritrea the UN development delegation team held meetings with Eritrea’s high ranking officials. It, for instance, held discussions with Osman Saleh, Foreign Affairs Minster, Dr. Ghergish Teklemichael, Minster of Economic Development, and Mr. Brhane Habtemariam, Minister of Finance as well as other high ranking officials about different development programs that have been implemented in the country.
In the occasion Mr. Osman Saleh said that Eritrea works for a safe neighborhood and a cooperative regional environment without which no nation can achieve sustainable development and thus the country seeks and welcomes genuine bilateral and multi-lateral partnerships.
The high-level UN development delegation team visited healthcare institutions in the Southern region, and water supply projects as well as solar irrigation system sites in the Central region. Hence, it has captured the real image of Eritrea in its own eyes.
Mr. Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, Assistant Secretary and General and Regional Director, UNDP/RBA and Chair, UNDG-ESA Mission (Head of Delegation) said “Eritrea has made significant progress in its achievement of the health related MDGs of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, malaria elimination and eradication of HIV and AIDS.”
Mr. Abdoulaye further pointed out that the Eritrean government should share its success stories with the international community because the positive impact being made in the country needs to be told. He also said that such stories should be documented as best practices and the United Nations is ready to partner with Government to achieve that.
In any sort of relationship two or more parties may cooperate in a number of development programs and if that partnership stars to bear fruit there would definitely be a reinforced partnership and cooperation among the parties. Thus, any sort of international cooperation and partnership is result based. It is the achievement registered in different development programs and above all its steady foreign affairs policy which enabled Eritrea to have a healthy relationship with international institutions which prioritize unconditional but rather genuine engagement.
Eritrea has been committed to achieve sustainable progress in different development sectors. It would also further reinforce its commitment to achieve even what seems impossible. The UN development delegation has discussed and witnessed the country’s priority and therefore according to Mr. Abdoulaye (head of the delegation) following its discussion the delegation has learned a number of possible entry points for deepening its cooperation with Eritrea and taking it to higher level of engagement.
